Pale limestone rises sharply behind the walled coastal town. Cypress belts follow the garden terraces, dry scrub covers the bare rock, and stone houses fill the lower harbour. A northern road reaches the upper gate, an inland switchback climbs round behind the walls, and the coast road comes in from below. Market villages inland give the attackers somewhere to gather, but the ridges funnel the short routes through the passes.
